Saying "No" to the World: The Sclerosis of the Modern State

There’s a lot of reason to feel gloomy about the world. It feels like we’re back where we started. This summer has been unprecedentedly hot and unpleasant in some parts of the world (the heat wave in the pacific northwest has been terrible, obviously – but some parts of Russia above the arctic circle recorded temperatures as high as 48 Celsius. That’s 118 degrees Fahrenheit.) What we see is that, throughout the world, but especially in North America and Western Europe, there is a dwindling of state capacity. We can see this in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, we have seen this in regard to climate change.

Social Murder in Action: Public Utilities in the Burn Down

I want to discuss the rolling blackouts that Evergy – the local electrical utility – engaged in during the President's Day Arctic Vortex, and how it constitutes social murder. While the situation in Missouri and Kansas is nowhere near the level of things in Texas, which produced a number of dramatic photographs (and which is dismissed by many because Texas went red, something that many people worst-served by the state aren’t responsible for,) it was still awful.

The American Blindspot

One thing that I feel explains not only a great deal of why so many well-meaning young people fail to grasp the nature of the world around them, but also why so much American political discourse is utterly useless: Americans simply cannot do anything like a materialist analysis of current events.
